Mark Messier is simply known to Ranger faithful as “The Captain.”
The beloved Messier will always have a special place in the hearts of Ranger fans after his heart and determination led the Rangers to the drought-breaking Cup championship of 1994. And now he will have a special place in the Ranger front office.
Glen Sather has brought No. 11 back to Broadway in the role of a special assistant to the General Manager. The organization is proud to bring back such an instrumental member of the team’s success and hopes that his eye for talent will lead to bringing in the type of personnel that will help rebuild this franchise into a winner. For Mess, it gives him another opportunity to thrive in New York, this time in a different capacity.
Messier had the following to say:
“I am looking forward to joining the Rangers organization and having the opportunity to learn a new part of the business, working closely with Glen,” Messier said in a statement. “I have felt a strong connection to the Rangers, Madison Square Garden and the city of New York from the moment I arrived in 1991. I am honored to begin this new chapter of my career here.”
The fans of New York love honoring The Captain and are surely glad he will bring his A-game to the Ranger front office. His first order of business will be to find a man to fill the role of top line center, the position he helped re-define for the Blueshirts.
