In a rare event, I am saluting a job well done by the New Jersey Devils. After the New Jersey Nets decided it was a good idea to remove ‘New Jersey’ from their road jerseys, the Devils marketing team thought they would take it to another level of comedy.
As the teary-eyed nj.com Star Ledger Editorial Blog reports:
The Devils purchased a full-color advertisement on a digital billboard towering over Interstate 78: “We proudly wear our state on our jerseys,”, with the bold words running beneath a photo of the hockey team’s NJ logo.
Seriously, that’s high comedy. Just a slap in the face to one of the NBA’s least appreciated and most tragic franchises.
As much as I hate the Devils, this was too funny, and nearly reminiscent of when ESPN.com notified the sports world that the Dallas Stars took out a billboard ad two years ago that made fun of the NBA for having cheating referees.
The message? “The only thing our refs shave is the ice.”

The Stars set the tone for billboards that bash the NBA. (nbarefssuck.com)

Too Many Men on the Site

The Devils are a great franchise and represent the great state of New Jersey very well.
All people in Central and North Jersey should root for them and not the out of state Rangers.
The Rangers are a New York team and not a true Jersey team regardless if they were here first or not.
I feel people are traders when they root for an out of state team.
Would you root for Canada vs USA in the Olympics because hockey was played in Canada first?
