Preseason Game 2
New Jersey Devils 3, New York Rangers 2 (SO) – 16 Sept 2009 – Prudential Center, NJ
Rangers (0-1-1) in Preseason
For the second straight night, the Broadway Blueshirts fell behind 2-0 and had to mount a comeback. On this night, they fought back to tie the game up thanks to third period goals by Matt Gilroy (at 3:03, assisted by Aaron Voros and Sean Avery) and Jordan Owens (at 11:46, assisted by Michael Del Zotto). Unfortunately, and somewhat the opposite of last year’s Ranger modus operandi, the Rangers fell to the Devils in the shootout, as they were outscored 2-1 over six rounds. Magically, Gilroy was the only Ranger to hit the back of the net during the shootout.
The top story has to be the fact that Gilroy and Del Zotto are showing up in the boxscore. At this point, the top 4 defensemen are defined, but the final 2-3 spots are certainly up for grabs. I would love to see Gilroy anchor the third line and anyone but Corey Potter to his side (I am a Michigan grad). To be honest, I was excited about the game of Alexei Semenov, who wouldn’t love to have a huge bullish Russian next to our (hopefully) next best offensive d-man? (In an ideal world, they can combine to form the extremely homeless man’s version of a Brian Leetch – Jeff Beukeboom tandem…okay, I’m dreaming.)
Marian Gaborik was once again a no-show and unfortunately for Sean Avery, so was Martin Brodeur. Avery actually scored a goal that was disallowed, which would have been surrounded with even more dramatic had it been with Fat Marty in net instead.
Newcomer Chad Johnson (aka Nueve Seis) got an opportunity in net tonight in relief of The King, and suffered the shootout loss. Somehow Henrik and Nueve Seis allowed a pair of power play goals to Sean Avery wannabe, David Clarkson. The Rangers went 0 for 6 on the power play, and now sit at 0 for 8 on the young preseason. Hey Tortorella, I see nothing has changed in that department…
