Gilroy demoted. I’m confused.

Matt Gilroy was demoted to the AHL.  Illka Heikkinen was recalled.  Assistant GM Jim Schoenfeld said the move was made because of “steady decline in [Gilroy's] play.”  They obviously are better hockey minds then us, but I did not see anything overtly bad.

Besides, I thought part of this year was to develop our young talent???  Matt Gilroy is exactly the type of player the Rangers should be force-feeding playing time.  He has talent, is signed for multiple years, and has a $1.75M cap number (much more than random other rookies).  So what does Sather do?  He demotes him to Hartford.  Oh, and this on the heels of him getting beat for the game-winner in OT.  Not exactly instilling confidence in the rookie.

Let’s hope the real reason is something related to short-term cap space and/or wanting to showcase Heinkinen for a trade.  Not sure this makes all that much sense, but you never know.

The Rangers keep trying to build for the future AND win this year.  That’s next to impossible to do.  Play the kids — all of them — and look to next year.  Trust me.  Fans will forgive you if you build a dynasty.  No one wants first round exits every year.  Except maybe management looking to keep their jobs.

Hopefully this move is part of some grand scheme to improve the team.  For now it strikes as just weird.

Hmm…maybe like some people are suggesting, it is clearing some cap space in preparation for a trade.

Sure, Gilroy is a work in progress and is not perfect, but this move seems kind of weird. What rookie would not be a work in progress, especially a defenceman?

And watching the games, did you ever have a “Rozsival-lightbulb” moment where you said to yourself. “Gilroy messed up?” (Well, at least before OT last game. No! Let the kid play. Plus, he was a great intermission interview.
