Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club – Administration
11230 – 110 Street
This is the address Glen Sather should use to send Tom Renney a letter of apology. Clearly, last year’s results were not his fault. ONE GOAL IN THE LAST THREE GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Five goals in the last five games. Are you kidding me!?!?!? What’s worse is the Rangers have lost four of the last five (including three straight, and were shut out for just shy of three games). At least under Renney, we won the close games. This year’s Rangers have a .531 winning percentage. Last year under Renney the team finished with a .579 winning percentage. We’re just barely ahead of last year’s goals for rate too. The team has regressed. So much for an attack, offense-oriented system.
I am a firm believer that in professional sports winning is everything. Meaning, that so long as you behave in an ethical way it does not matter how much someone dislikes you or your methods. If you win, you did a good job. For example, I do not like coaches that use fear as a motivating tactic. I do not like coaches that are prone to violent outbursts. I do not like coaches that make frequent changes. But if you win, I’ll get past it. Tortorella does all of these. Yet the Rangers are not winning. Tough for me to support a coach who’s methods I disapprove of when the team is not responding to them. Hey Torts — how about trying something different. Keep the lines together for, get this, multiple GAMES in a row. Reunite Staal and Girardi. Play Del Zotto and Gilroy together full-time. Lisin gets a roster spot (did you see last night’s game — he was the best Ranger by far). Anisimov gets 14-17 minutes, no questions asked. Stop putting the fear of god in them. It may have worked in Tampa Bay. It’s clearly not here. Adapt to your players and do something different, by doing less meddling. At least give it a shot. There’s not much to lose at this point.
