Olympic Ranger Follow-Up
What a bronze medal game from a Ranger perspective. An injured Gaborik scored and looked spry (ish) in the final 2 minutes. And Jokinen scored twice, once on a wrist shot and once on a breakaway. That bodes well for the Rangers offense post break. Now all we need is a Callahan hat trick and Drury to be a +5 with 4 assists and an empty netter. (Let’s not talk about Lundqvist’s mini meltdown earlier in the tournament.)
GO U-S-A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some bloggers have taken the position that hockey sideline (for lack of a better term) reporters, such as Pierre McGuire, are unnecessary and even obtrusive to the broadcast. I could not disagree more.
In football, the usefulness of sideline reporters is a just a half-step above a snowboard in Hawaii. “So coach, how do you feel about your team being down 45-3 at the half?” Or worse, not reporting on injuries or what’s actually happening on the sidelines. But football is not hockey. And the NFL is not the NFL. The NHL does not have the seemingly arbitrary rules that corporatize [...]
Now THAT Was A Hockey Game!
ESPN Classics was a great idea when it began. Run classic games of all sports so people can relive their childhoods. Then they began instant classics — games that the second you finish watching you know will be remembered for years to come. Most of their “instant classics” are just mediocre games. Last night’s US-Canada Olympic hockey match, however, was a true instant classic (at least if you bleed blue in addition to red and white, and especially if your name does not end in Brodeur).
There is something about building a team — not just a collection of all-stars — that more [...]
Just In Case
On the off chance you were not aware of it…Armageddon is scheduled for 7:40 pm EST Sunday. US-Canada. Callahan, Drury. Enough said.
5 goals, 4 at even strength, 3 world class Lundqvist saves, 2 fights, and one penalty shot. Result = another quality victory (though this one was quality for the last 40-minutes only). Nice momentum and secondary scoring entering the Olympic break. Too bad we’re entering the break, injuries aside. Got to love how the team is slowly starting to come together. I did crack up, again, when Maloney referred to how the team is learning to grasp Torts’ message that offense will come from good defense. Isn’t this Renney’s system??? (Sorry for harping on this, but I hate when professional [...]
Now that’s a hockey game!!! Finally, a full 60-minute effort. But why does it take two top players going down to injury and a chicken-sh-t move by Cooke to force Drury to fight to energize us? We should be playing with that much heart all the time. The Pens played like AHL Hershey and still put the fear of god in me. Granted, it could be their immense talent level, so you never feel safe against any line — #3 center Jordan Staal would unquestionably be our #1 center. It could be that the Rangers fail in close games at the [...]
Sweet Justice
The same day that Brashear goes through waivers, Betts signs a 2-year contract extension. Brashear’s signing was a mistake from day 1. He was old, slow, and unnecessary in the new NHL. And letting Betts go was a mistake as well. We had one of the top, if not top, PK in the league. He was well-liked and the type of hard-working reliable player the Rangers are searching for right now. And it of course especially hurt because of Brashear’s cheap shot which ended Betts’ Ranger career, and basically the Rangers playoffs. Good riddance Donald. Good luck Blair. (Well, not too [...]
