Thats right, it has been 16 years exactly since we saw Mark Messier’s big grin nodding up and down virtually jumping for joy with the cup in his hand. That’s one thing I always loved about him, for all the Stanley Cups he won in Edmonton, you could tell how much this one meant to him. Personally, I think it was because it was the first time he stepped out of Wayne Gretzky’s shadow and won a cup with his OWN team. He lived up to his promise and we love(d) him for it. He’ll always be a fan favorite of Rangers fans for generations to come.
On this same day Brian Leetch won the Conn Smyth Trophy and was forever solidified as the New York Rangers’ best defenceman of all time.
It took 54 years for this day to happen again, and we remember 16 years ago for all the great reasons. We just hope it doesn’t take another 38 years for this to happen again.
I’ll always remember Sam Rosen’s play-by-play.
