First off, I want to apologize for barely keeping this thing updated. To be honest I’ve been slightly busy, but at the same time, there really wasn’t much to report.
That is, until today.
Rangers re-signed Dan Girardi to a 4 year deal worth $13.3 million dollars total. That is officially more than the $3 mil/year he was asking.
Wow.
I think I’m speechless. I had to actually sit here, gather myself, and figure out what to type next. I swear Glen Sather is as good at deal making as Peter Griffin is at haggling.
(Sorry, its so long, only good one I could find – about half way in you’ll see what I’m referring to)
I apologize if you’re not a Family Guy fan, but I had to find something to lighten the mood. Details, other than those numbers, are still a mystery, but I’m curious as to if maybe this was a low-high contract or incentive based or just straight $13.3 million in his pocket. I don’t know who can be happy about this contract besides Girardi.
This now makes me think Marc Staal will get anywhere between $4-5 million a year. At the same time, Staal’s situation is different as he has less leverage, not being able to file for arbitration. And knowing Sather, nothing is predictable. Except our offense.

So we’re still waiting on that free agent center to be signed. My two desires, Eric Belanger and Kyle Wellwood are both still available and I would love to see them in Ranger blue. Wellwood would be a nice match for Vinny Prospal and Marian Gaborik. I think that line would be insane. Not to mention, Wellwood is good at winning the face-off as well(wood). Sorry, couldn’t help it.
With Manny Malhotra being signed by the Vancouver Canucks, that pretty much put the nail in the coffin on Wellwood’s career in British Columbia. Which makes him open to any destination.
Balanger would probably come at a $1-2 million a year deal for two years, but once again, numbers are stab in the dark with this team.
