Before the playoffs started, Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton of the “Boomer and Carton” show on WFAN Radio conducted attempted to “Freeze Out” Alexander Ovechkin. Apparently it’s a “Nordic Tradition” to stick stick a jersey of the opposing team’s top player in a freezer.
No word on if Zuccarello also tried this. Granted, I don’t know how much Thor cares about the New York Rangers, but we’ll take all the help we can get. I bring this video up for two reasons. One, it’s pretty funny watching two guys ceremoniously stick an Ovechkin jersey in a cooler full of ice. But it’s also to bring up what is the sad state of hockey coverage in the Metro area. How pathetic is it that the only radio personality that will actively discuss hockey is a former NFL quarterback? If there’s anyone on the radio in New York who has an excuse to not know much about the NHL, it’s Boomer Esiason. Not to discredit Boomer, because he is certainly a good radio host and he has a wide array of knowledge, but there’s no doubt that the number one thing on his resume, and the number one thing that got him a job in sports broadcasting, is his NFL career. Compare that to guys like Michael Kay and Colin Cowherd. These are guys who got into the field because they studied in in school. Because they supposedly knew a lot about sports. That’s what their job is. Not to only have interest in three sports, but all of them. Basketball is hardly my favorite sport, but I at least can hold my own in a discussion about it. I know most of the rules, can discuss majority of the players, and will watch the occasional game. Mike Francesca barely knows the difference between Brandon Prust and a hand-pass.
The Rangers are in the playoffs and have a young, homegrown hard working team, and yet most of the guys on ESPN 1050 and WFAN 660 would rather spend 2 hours talking about how fat Rex Ryan is this week and the size of Derek Jeter’s house. At least make an effort. Sure, perhaps hockey doesn’t draw as many listeners, but that’s a cyclical problem. Part of the reason that people care less about hockey is because the mainstream sports shows, both on TV and radio, refuse to discuss it. Guys like Francesca and Michael Kay and Colin Cowherd blatantly refuse to even moderately discuss hockey, which is truly ignorant and stupid considering we have one of the most storied teams in North American sports history playing on the ice at Madison Square Garden.
