According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, this very well may be the case. According to Dreger, the Flyers are the leading candidate to host next year’s Winter Classic. The NHL is currently exploring venues. The Rangers are “waiting for confirmation of their involvement” but apparently they are the likely opponent. Dreger is very reliable, so I have no reason to assume his information is wrong. Still, even if his sources are 100% correct about the NHL’s plans, the NHL still hasn’t completely decided. So we’ll have to wait and see.
Now, aside from what this means at face value – that the Rangers would be playing in a Winter Classic – it also means some other great things. The NHL stated that they wanted to do another 24/7 for next season’s Winter Classic. That means we would be seeing some quality footage of what is going on in the Rangers locker room, on the bench, during practices, etc. Considering the Rangers are far from the most media-friendly team in the NHL, this would be pretty special to see, if only for the guaranteed memorable Tortorella quotes that would be shown.
Bettman has also promised future Winter Classics to visiting teams that have participated. In other words, if the Rangers were the visiting team for a Philadelphia Winter Classic, then the Rangers would have one of their own in the future.
