According to Mitch Beck of Howlings, the Rangers have signed prospect and restricted free agent Dale Weise to a new contract. The deal is reportedly a two way deal and will pay him $605K for one year. Weise is quoted as saying that he’s been told that he “has a good chance” of making the Rangers next season, and that he’s going to work hard to earn a spot on the opening night roster. It’s worth noting that, this season, he would have to pass through waivers if the Rangers want to send him to the Connecticut Whale.
Weise has been written off by most fans, and to some extent that’s understandable. In his few games with the Rangers last year he looked irrelevant at best and pathetic at worst. Still, he’s had two good seasons in the AHL and will only be 24 next season. I think that alone earns him another shot. If nothing else, he’s a solid AHL player and a veteran who would be on a team filled with numerous first tim pros.
