The Brad Richards sweepstakes has been very unique so far and something I haven’t seen. As many as 7 NHL teams have expressed their serious interest in signing the coveted center. The highest bidder so far are the Calgary Flames, who reportedly offered Richards a 9-year, $64 million deal. We’ve even seen teams break out some secret recruiting weapons as well. Calgary had Jarome Iginla call Richards personally. The Kings had the “Great One” Wayne Gretzky entice Richards to sign with the Kings by explaining the benefits of playing in L.A.
Other teams involved such as the Leafs, Flyers, Lightning, and Canadiens all made their presentations at some point today in Toronto. However, after that’s gone on, the consensus amongst people in the know is that the Rangers are still the front-runners to sign Richards, although they don’t have the highest bid on the table.
You can infer a lot from the fact that Richards would rather sleep on his life-changing decision rather than making a hasty one. Does this mean the Rangers have the edge? Who knows. But, at least you know Richards isn’t completely about the money. If he was, he would have been the newest member of the Calgary Flames by now.
Stay tuned tomorrow.
