Tragedy still befalls the Boogaard family as news has come out that Aaron Boogaard, 24, brother of Derek Boogaard, was arrested and charged today with third-degree sale of a controlled substance, a felony, and interference with a death, a gross misdemeanor in connection with Derek Boogaard’s accidental death May 13th. According to the reports, Aaron attempted to control his brother’s intake of oxycodone and destroyed the remaining supplies by flushing them down the toilet before authorities found the body.
These revelations are absolutely flooring. According to the reports, Boogaard had been out of drug rehab for just one day before his younger brother gave him the painkiller oxycodone at the start of an evening of night-clubbing, drug-taking and heavy drinking that resulted in his death. To say it’s irresponsible behavior is an understatement.
Here are some excerpts from the Minnesota Star-Tribune article:
Police were called to the apartment, where Aaron Boogaard told officers that he had given Derek the powerful painkiller oxycodone before the NHLer went out to nightclubs with friends the previous night.
Aaron said his brother intended to go on a “binger” and celebrate one day after being released from a chemical-dependency treatment center.
Aaron Boogaard also told the officers that he had been holding for his brother the narcotics OxyContin and Percocet, neither of which came from a doctor.
To knowingly give your brother, who just finished treatment for substance abuse, uncontrolled painkillers before he goes out to drink all night is very sketchy and something that warrants more investigating. However, It’s very difficult to make any assumptions from what has been reported. In all honesty, it’s a very sensitive matter and the worst thoughts and opinions should be kept to ones self.
The thoughts and prayers should still be with the Boogaard family as they continue to deal with their family issues.
