BREAKING: Rangers Sign 2011 First-Rounder J.T. Miller (Updated)

J.T. Miller, this years first-round selection, in action at the Rangers' recent prospect development camp (Blueshirts United)

Editor Update: According to Sunaya Sapurji of Yahoo Sports Canada, Miller is reporting to the Plymouth Whalers tomorrow. As far as I can tell, this makes it pretty clear that Miller will be spending this year in the OHL.

Per the Rangers’ official twitter page, 2011 first-round selection Jonathan ‘J.T.’ Miller has signed his entry-level contract with the Blueshirts this afternoon.

Miller had recently announced his decision to forgo an initial commitment to North Dakota, choosing to play for the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers instead this coming season. Miller is eligible to play in the AHL with the Connecticut Whale this year, though that remains unlikely as it would see the Rangers lose a year on his entry-level contract.

Despite being somewhat of a surprise pick at the time, everything you read and see of Miller makes you understand just why the Rangers took him at 15th overall. It’s obvious that he and the Rangers are looking to fast-track his development, at least to some extent, and it will be interesting to see just how he fares for the Whalers next season.
