The Rangers players have gathered together to do some informal workouts before the real training camp starts, which is of course not a bad thing. It makes transitioning from the offseason to competitive hockey a bit easier on the team and it also gives newly acquired guys like Brad Richards and Mike Rupp a chance to meet up with their new teammates without the pressures of training camp immediate.
During the team scrimmage today Dubinsky played at the left wing spot alongside Richards and Gaborik. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, though. None of the Rangers coaching staff (including Tortorella) is even allowed to be involved since training camp hasn’t officially started yet. And we know that Tortorella will try multiple combinations of wingers to play with Richards and Gaborik before making a decision. Maybe it was Dubinsky who decided for himself to play with those two today. Maybe it was a team vote. Maybe it was Kris Newbury who decided line combinations today. Regardless, at least one person on the Rangers thought that, for the first scrimmage, Brandon Dubinsky was the right fit at first line left wing. As I said, these are informal scrimmages and the teams were probably made up on the fly, but at the same time they’re not a joke either. Line combinations were clearly made with a bit of forethought, so perhaps this signals that Dubinsky is believed to be the early favorite to earn the first line left wing spot.
