As James posted about earlier, the hockey world experienced quite possibly its most horrific event in the sport’s history when news broke that a plane carrying the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team, training, and coaching staff crashed, killing everybody on board. Obviously, the KHL is going to feel this the most, but the NHL is also affected by it greatly. We fans know many of the names of players on board, including Pavol Demitra, Karklis Skrastins, and Ruslan Salei. Karel Rachunek and Jan Marek were former Rangers property. The players in the NHL are friends with many of these players, and some of our own Rangers are being hit hard by the tragedy.
Steve Zipay has quotes from some Rangers. Artem Anisimov spent much time in Lokomotiv’s system and developed there before coming to North America. He played with many of the players on the team and knew much of the coaching staff as well.
Henrik Lundqvist was friends with Stefan Liv, who was a Swedish goaltender on the team.
Marian Gaborik and Pavol Demitra’s friendship is well known. They were both teammates on Trencin Dukla of the Czech League during the 2004-2005 lockout and played on a line together with the Minnesota Wild. Both Slovakian, they also played in various international tournaments together, including the Olympics. Gaborik is reportedly taking the news “hard.”
