When you go to a Rangers game at Madison Square Garden and are crazy enough to purchase any team apparel there instead of online, you’re bound to see these names: Henrik Lundqvist, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Marian Gaborik, Brad Richards, Marc Staal. All popular players, deserving of their own merchandise. You know a name you will NOT see: Dan Girardi.
That’s right, your current defensive anchor, alternate captain, and all-around tough guy Dan Girardi’s name is not on a single jersey or t-shirt. Befuddling considering he’s a vital cog to the success of the team. Take Girardi out of our defense, still without Marc Staal, and the team is in dire straits; that’s how important he is.
Join me after the jump to find out why this is the case and what one Rangers blogger is doing to fix it.
Fellow blogger Michael Gleich of Bleeding All Blue is bewildered that MSG doesn’t sell any Dan Girardi apparel for this reason: he isn’t a popular name asked for. Here’s what he found out:
From what I have been told, the reason that no Girardi merchandise is available in the stores at MSG is because it is not a requested item by the fans. Time for us to change that fact. Making that happen is very simple. Next time you are at MSG for a Rangers game take a few minutes to walk into a store and tell someone working there that you are requesting the Rangers start making Dan Girardi apparel. If you want go ahead and ask for some other players as well since McDonagh, Sauer, Anisimov, and the best backup in the league Martin Biron deserve some love as well, but in my opinion at least Girardi not having one at this point is simply wrong.
Gleich has also created a Facebook page in the attempts of spearing the word like wildfire to get Girardi a bit more recognition and his name on jerseys for sale. For someone who is very underrated at what he does, let’s show him he’s not under-appreciated amongst the Ranger faithful. I urge everyone to like the Facebook page and get this ball moving in the right direction.
