With all that Bobby Ryan talk not too long ago, it made me think. With young guys coming up through the ranks like Chris Kreider, Tim Erixon, and Christian Thomas (to name a few) do we need a superstar? I don’t think we do. I think last years Bruins proved that you can win the cup without those big name players, and win on depth alone.
You need everyone on your team to contribute, and not just be a one line team. The reason why I think teams like the Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks, and San Jose Sharks, have failed to win the cup the last few years is because they only get contributions from portions of their line up.
How does this regard to the Rangers? Read more to find out.
The Rangers could very easily fall into this category of team in which they are loaded with talent but yet fail to get anywhere in the playoffs. Acquiring Bobby Ryan would have been the first step towards that. By trading away a large portion of the team for one player makes the team that much more one dimensional. The Rangers can roll four lines right now. Why would you want to change that?
Now here comes why they absolutely should not trade for a guy like Bobby Ryan. The Rangers are going to be shedding a lot of salary after this year. Wojtek Wolski, Sean Avery, Ruslan Fedotenko and their contracts will most likely be taken off the books. That leaves room for guys like Kreider, Thomas, Ryan Bourque, and JT Miller, to try and crack the roster. So in that sense, trying to load up the books with another big contract isn’t exactly the smart way to go.
We have seen glimpses of brilliance from the Rangers this year, and if they try to make a big move to win it all this year it could very well blow up in their face. The Rangers have a chance to be a great team for the next few years and there’s no point to trow that all away to try and win a single championship. If the Rangers stay the course they could very well win multiple championships in the next few years.
Stay patient my fellow Rangers fans. This team will be very good before we know it.
