Poor Mats Zuccarello can not catch a break. The guy has 22 points in 18 games with the Connecticut Whale this season but really has no opening to be called up due to to depth of the New York Rangers roster. Now, Mats suffered an ankle injury in a game against the Hershey Bears that will keep him out for four to six weeks.
It was going to be hard enough for Mats to get a call-up, and the injury does him no favors. His agent recently was on record saying that the Rangers were open to trading Zuccarello to another NHL team but any teams that were interested in him will surely delay, if not altogether abandon thoughts of making a move. Our Connecticut Whale writer Michael will perhaps have further, more in-depth thoughts, but I can imagine that this is a major blow for the Whale, as we’ve already taken Mitchell and Hagelin, previously two of their top performers. Zuccarello was putting up points and specifically was a catalyst for their powerplay.
