When looking at who might have the upper hand for the Winter Classic one has to see who has played in the elements before. Of course the Flyers played in the Winter Classic two years ago but some Rangers have already played outdoors also. Some not at the pro level but at least they have played big games outside.
Playing outdoors is very different than indoors. It’s freezing cold for one and also the ice surface is very different. The surface is harder and snow piles up easier. I think it’s important that both teams get some practice outdoors and maybe even watch some video of previous Winter Classics.
Read more to see the breakdown on who has played outdoors at some level.
Rangers Players Who Have Played Outside:
Derek Stepan- Once as apart of University of Wisconsin.
Ryan Mcdonagh- Once as apart of University of Wisconsin.
Carl Hagelin- Twice as apart of University of Michigan.
Mike Rupp- Once. Played in 2011 Winter Classic.
Erik Christensen- Once. Played in 2008 Winter Classic.
Flyers Players Who Have Played Outside:
Flyers Who Played In The 2010 Winter Classic-James Van Riemsdyk – Claude Giroux – Chris Pronger (Out for this game) – Matt Carle – Kimmo Timmonen – Daniel Briere – Scott Hartnell – Braydon Coburn.
Jaromir Jagr- Played outside in the 2009 KHL All-Star Game captaining Team Jagr against Team Yashin.
Maxime Talbot- Played in the 2008 and 2011 Winter Classics.
Well it’s pretty clear the Flyers have the clear cut advantage when it comes to playing outdoors so Rangers who haven’t played outdoors should be looking to Hagelin, Mcdonagh, Stepan, Rupp, and yes even Christensen for advice. Like all young kids i’m sure the Rangers grew up playing on a pond so i’m sure they will be fine.
