Sergei Bobrovsky, Not Bryzgalov, To Be In Net For Flyers During Winter Classic

I'm sure this mask will look wonderful on the Flyers' bench.

Ilya Bryzgalov told the media today that it is not he, but rather Sergei Bobrovsky who will be in goal for the Flyers at the Winter Classic tomorrow. This is not shocking news but still pretty anti-climactic and telling of the Flyers goaltending situation. After signing Bryzgalov to a huge contract and with him becoming increasingly notable because of his comments on HBO’s 24/7, the Flyers have elected to not start him in the marquee game of the regular season; and one that happens to be against their rivals and competition in the Rangers. Bobrovsky’s numbers are actually better than Bryzgalov’s so it’s not as if Laviolette is necessarily making the wrong decision. The point is though that the Flyers revamped the whole roster largely so that they could sign Bryzgalov to an expensive, long-term deal and so far he is not matching expectations.

Bobrovsky is 1-1-1 against the Rangers in his career but has been solid in those appearances, posting a 2.22 GAA and a .924 Save %. In his only start against the Rangers so far this season he let in two goals on 32 shots.
