Josh Rimer has reported that Carl Hagelin will be filling in as an injury replacement as part of the All-Star Game’s rookie invites. On top of those selected to take part in the All-Star game, the NHL invites a select number of rookies to enjoy the weekend festivities and take part in the Skills Competition. Hagelin will now join that group and thus travel to Ottawa with Lundqvist, Gaborik, and Girardi.
While Hagelin has been the new homegrown prospect to make noise with the Rangers, and certainly has become a player fans highly regard, I don’t think he’s been getting as much league-wide recognition as he deserves. His backchecking and defensive work are impeccable and 8 goals and 16 points in 29 games is no small feat for a rookie primarily known for more than offensive ability.
Hagelin’s speed is the worst kept secret among Rangers fans, but Carl will get a prime chance to show the world just how fast he is. I imagine he’ll be a choice for the fastest skater competition and we’ll get to see how he compares to the league’s best.
