The Rangers have played great hockey so far this season. While at times it hasn’t been pretty, the Rangers find themselves tied for first in the east. It was a good win against the Jets on Tuesday night and the Rangers need to keep the momentum going.
There are still some things that could use some work though, because I think the Rangers can play better. The game against Winnipeg was a very complete game but there were still some mistakes that could have ended up in the back of the net. Good scoring chances will occur but lucky for the Rangers they have the best goalie (in my opinion) in the game.
Read more to see how I think the Rangers can improve their game after the All-Star break. I made up three things the team should do during the break, and a list of players they should try to acquire.
Fix The Power Play- I could sit here all day and talk about strategy in how to improve the power play but I won’t. I’m sure everyone has a pretty good sense in how a power play should be run. The power play troubles falls on the team as a whole, and it’s something they definitely need to fix. Whether that means the Rangers bringing in Teemu Selanne (I can only dream) or the club watching video of the Canucks running their power play. I think they should really be open to any ideas at this point. Also, if the Rangers do bring in Selanne somehow, and the power play still fails, then we can all beg for Mike Sullivan to not run the power play anymore.
Please Give Richards Some Wingers- Brad Richards is a passer and is one of the best passers in the game. Putting him with guys like Fedotenko and Prust will not get him going. He needs to be able to pass to someone with some offensive ability. I suggest putting him on a line with Gaborik and Hagelin. At the beginning of the year he played with Gabby and I didn’t think they did bad contrary to some other people out there who they failed as line mates.
Make A Few Trade Offers- While I don’t think the Rangers should trade until the deadline, I do believe they should get the ball rolling. Now is the time to narrow down who you want at the deadline and make some phone calls. Here’s my short list of players the Rangers should try to acquire:
Bobby Ryan (At the right price of course)
Teemu Selanne- Worth a try. Maybe he’ll want to go to a contender. With the Ducks slowly climbing back into the playoff race they might need him though.
Shane Doan (we’ve been over this)
Tuomo Ruutu- Player you love have to have, hate to play against. Sort of like what’s appealing about Sean Avery right?
Ryan Smyth- He might want to remain an Oiler regardless of what happens, but if he would wive his NTC Sather should give it a shot.
Ales Hemsky- He doesn’t always play in hockey games but when he does, he scores a lot. Actually scratch that I doubt he would survive a series against Boston.
Vinny Prospal- Bring back the Tan Man! Vinny is instant offense and this club could use a guy like Prospal.
Brad Boyes- Struggling this year but a big body presence that can score. On a one year deal and nothing to lose.
