With Erik Christensen gone in a trade to the Minnesota Wild is Sather going for something big or just getting rid of unneeded players? It’s certainly tough to tell now but as it gets closer to the trade deadline Sather will definitely make a move. Sather even brought in Bryan Mccabe last year when the Rangers didn’t have much of a chance of going deep in the playoffs. I’d be very surprised if this is the last trade Sather makes before the trade deadline.
Read more after the jump to see the two types of trades Sather can make before the deadline.
The Big Impact Trade- With Wojtek Wolski playing for the Whale maybe Sather is gearing up for a decently sized trade. Wolski alone has practically no value as a trade piece but teams need to physically see him play. Wolski would be the first person gone if the Rangers were to make a splash due to his large cap hit. He’d either be traded or sent down to Hartford full time but neither has happened yet. If Wolski is traded Sather is going for a large fish, and if he is merely sent down Sather might only be adding a decent player.
Getting Rid Of The Undesirables Trade(s)- I suspect that Sather is looking to do more Erik Christensen like trades also. People who fall into the Erik Christensen category in the Rangers organization are Pavel Valentenko, Wojtek Wolski, and Mats Zuccarello to name a few. These guys are almost unneeded in the Rangers organization, but a player like Zuccarello might be valuable to another team. I definitely see Sather getting rid of these types of players before the deadline.
In my opinion I expect a normal trade at the deadline. I don’t see Sather trading any current Rangers roster players, but I do think Sather trades for someone for cheap that can be inserted into the line up. Another words, that means no Bobby Ryan. I do however think Sather gets a rental player like Vinny Prospal or Brad Boyes who is on a rental but can be acquired for picks and a decent prospect.
