This past offseason everybody was discussing how Richards would be brought in to help out Marian Gaborik. However, for the most part they’ve played independent of each other. Now it appears that Richards might be looking to bring someone in to help his play. According to Kosta Papoulias of Montreal Hockey Talk, sources indicate that Brad Richards discussed the Rick Nash acquisition with Glen Sather and went out of his way to voice a desire for Nash to be brought to the team.
Clearly this is an unconventional source, and I’m sure there are going to be people quick to dismiss the information on the basis that it didn’t come from a Bob McKenzie or Darren Dreger or established beat writer. If you do not want to believe the information then that is your prerogative; I’m simply providing what I hear. But let me establish the fact that, while I obviously can’t reveal from whom he received this information, I can assure you that his source is one that is directly connected to the NHL. Kosta’s source is legitimate.
Assuming it is true, it’s a bold move by Richards, who has only been with the team since July and has seemingly tried to merely blend in with the group. Rick Nash has as good of a wrist shot as just about anybody in the NHL and I’d imagine that Richards could set him up for some excellent goals. It also would express Richards’ confidence in the current group; that he believes that the Rangers are in a position to make a move like this.
Per the source, the Blue Jackets did in fact try to get Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto included in the deal but Glen Sather wanted no part of that. It appears that the biggest obstacle in making a trade right now is that the Blue Jackets want Derek Stepan included whereas Glen Sather refuses and instead is offering Brandon Dubinsky.
We’ll update if we find out more.
