Mats Zuccarello played yesterday for the Rangers, and boy he looked really good considering he hasn’t played with the big club in a while. He looked very good on the power play which is the role he’ll probably end up being plugged into a lot if he stays in New York.
Anyway, MZA playing well last night had me thinking: If Zuccarello is a success playing with the Rangers, do the Rangers need to sign Chris Kreider to an Entry-Level Contract? I don’t think the Rangers have to if Zuccarello is successful and nor do I think they will. If MZA remains a mainstay on the roster looking up and down the lineup there’d be no room for Kreider. The top 6 won’t be touched and I’m doubtful Tortorella would pull out Fedotenko or even Mitchell for a kid coming out of college who doesn’t know the system.
If however the Rangers are struggling for scoring and Kreider’s college season ends early, then I’d think Sather would be compelled to get Kreider signed. He’s already flirted with the idea during his press conference after the trade deadline ended. Also, we have yet to hear if Kreider is going to complete his season year which would be his decision if he wanted to do so. That wouldn’t make NYR management happy, but if Kreider really wants to go back to college then he’ll be going back to college. That decision is really up to him and his family.
