Losing Today's Game Could Benefit The Rangers Greatly

The Rangers take on the Capitals today in what will be their last game of the year. Fortunately they don’t need to win to make the playoffs this time around. Meanwhile the Panthers are playing the Hurricanes later tonight.

The Panthers and Capitals are separated by two points in the Southeast Division. If the Panthers lose and  the Capitals win then the tiebreaker goes to Washington. This means that the Capitals will get the 3rd seed and the Panthers the 6th seed. If the Panthers get one point however, they still win the division. The odds of that scenario occurring are put at  19% occurring to Sportsclubstats.com.

I hope that scenario occurs tonight because I personally would rather face the Panthers than the Capitals in the first round of the playoffs. Not that I don’t think the Rangers should be able to beat those two teams, but I think they match up better with the Panthers.

I’m curious to find out if Lundqvist starts tonight anyway. Personally, I wouldn’t start him but I’m not coaching the Rangers.
