The NHL announced today that Henrik Lundqvist is one of the three finalists for the Vezina Trophy, which is awarded to the top goaltender of the regular season. This is Henrik’s fourth nomination for the Vezina Trophy and his first since 2008. If he wins the award, it will be the first of his career. Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings and Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators are the other two nominees.
Here are the statistics for the three Vezina finalists:
Statistically Lundqvist and Quick are very similar, with Rinne falling short in everything outside of wins, which is the shakiest of stats when evaluating a goaltender. It’s most likely going to be a battle between Quick and Lundqvist for the Vezina Trophy. Quick carried his team to down the stretch and did just enough to help the Kings make the playoffs as the eighth seed in the Western Conference. Lundqvist was equally as important for the Rangers but in terms of obtaining the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Which will GM’s, who are the voters for the Vezina Trophy, value more? Or will they rely on what they’ve watched to make their decisions? I think this is as good of a chance as Lundqvist has had to get his first Vezina Trophy but Jonathan Quick has an impressive resumé himself. We’ll see what happens.
