Does What Zach Parise Say Now Really Matter?

Today was breakup day for the New Jersey Devils, and of course the captain and soon to be unrestricted free agent Zach Parise, was asked questions about his future. When asked if he would play for the Rangers, Parise said “No way”. But what did people expect him to say? Did they think he’d say stuff like “I’d consider it” or “Yeah, it looks like a blast to play there”. As far as I know I don’t think people asked if he would consider playing in Detroit or Minnesota either. Those two teams are the highly rumored places for where Parise could play come July 1st.

But should we really take his word? Johnny Damon was saying similar things about the Yankees before he signed with them. Money and opportunity can definitely change someone’s opinion.

Parise could be telling the truth though. Maybe deep down he really hates the Rangers and wants nothing to do with them. But I do think come July 1st if he leaves New Jersey and goes to another team besides the Rangers, the reasoning won’t be because he hates them. There are other factors involved.

Parise to me also made the wrong move if he is telling the truth about not wanting to play in New York. He potentially drove the price down for the highest bidding team. If he wasn’t serious about playing for the Rangers he could have used them as leverage to simply get a higher bid from another team. It’s no secret that Glen Sather would probably move mountains to get him, and probably overpay for him.

So for the time being I’m going to take what Parise says with a grain of salt, because stranger things have happened when players hit free agency. I’m not saying the Rangers are favorites to get him, but they will be one of the contenders if Parise makes it to July 1st. Let’s see what Parise will be saying when there’s a boatload of cash on the table.
