Please, No Big Time Free Agency Moves This Summer For The New York Rangers

Glen Sather, please put down the New York Rangers checkbook.  Look I know you’re big on scoring the big names in free agency, but really, lets not go back.  Let’s keep moving forward and working on developing the youth.  Look how well the Rangers have done working on players at the AHL level.  In the past, Sather stacked the team with big name free agents.  Now?  He’s figured out that adding solid free agents to a strong base of players from the system yields excellent results.  Don’t believe me?

All drafted by the New York Rangers, not signed in some block buster deal.  In addition to these 10 players, the Rangers picked up Dan Girardi and Mats Zuccarello as undrafted free agents in 2006 and 2010 respectively.  Scouts gambled that those two would make it through the drafted unsigned.  And sure enough, the Rangers reaped the benefit of holding off.  Okay so I would have picked Girardi over Anisimov, but can’t win them all, right?

Adding these players to lines with Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik leads to a fuller team, something the Rangers were missing for so many years.  And now with the free agency opening up, I hope the Rangers can keep it to a minimum.

So from now until July 1st, I’m going to hope that Sather and co pass on many if not all the “big name” free agents and highlight why the New York Rangers should stay away.

Twelve days until July 1st, 12 players the Rangers do not need to go near when Free Agency opens up.  Stay tuned for details.
