Rangers Have To Match Any Sane Offer Sheet For Del Zotto

One of the last things to do this summer for General Manager Glen Sather is to get Michael Del Zotto a new contract. The 22 year old restricted free agent defenseman is currently without a contract and is ineligible for arbitration. While Del Zotto’s agent and Rangers management try to get a contract in place, other teams may want to throw an offer sheet the Rangers way. In the scenario a team does offer sheet Del Zotto, the Rangers will be forced to match.

The Rangers will have to match because the compensation from a potential offer sheet won’t outweigh Del Zotto’s contribution to the team. Yes taking in the extra salary would hurt but the Rangers can afford to rake in the salary at the moment. I don’t think the Predators were jumping for joy to match Shea Weber’s offer sheet but they did it because four first round picks do not make up the loss for arguably the best defenseman in the game.

If a team were to offer sheet Del Zotto for $3.3 million a year, the compensation would be just a second round pick going the Rangers way. That’s not nearly enough to entice the Rangers to let him go. Is Del Zotto worth that much a year? No. The Rangers would simply have to bite the bullet and take the money. I have a funny feeling a team like the Flyers would do this to the Rangers just to make them match.
