Oh my, Michael Sauer. I was hoping this post would come up later in the summer, when more of an update is available on him, seeing as since January when he finally stopped practicing, there hasn’t been much of an update on his concussion progress.
The young New York Rangers defensemen was rocking back in December after Dion Phaneuf slammed into him on December 11th. I was at that game and the sonic boom that makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about. Through the years, I’ve watched Phaneuf slam into many players, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen something of this magnitude, probably because the hit usually isn’t against a player that I like.
I can’t tell which makes me more sick, the fact that Sauer hasn’t seen play since this hit, the fact that it was a perfectly legal hit, or the reaction of Daddy Phaneuf:
Prior to this hit, Sauer had a promising season as a New York Ranger. Just 19 games into the season, he was on a roll. Building on his growth of last season, with 3 goals and 12 assists, his 1 goal and 2 assists were pointing towards an equally strong offensive season. And his defensive skills were natural, a little inconsistent, but he was only 19 games into his second NHL season. And as many New York Rangers fans have seen, some young defenders hit a skid in their second season as Rangers *ahemDelZottoahem*.
Will Sauer ever see the ice again? Who knows at this point, there’s no crystal ball when it comes to head injuries. The best thing fans can do is sit and wait and hope that Sauer can be healthy again soon.
Lets Go Rangers!
