Right now it seems that the lineup you see for the Rangers is the lineup your going to see on opening night (whenever that may be). But there’s only one player that still needs a contract and that’s Michael Del Zotto. Larry Brooks today said that the Rangers and Del Zotto are far apart on the contract and Del Zotto and his agents want north of $2.5 million a year.
Personally I think giving him more than $2.5 at this stage of his career is too much. Del Zotto hasn’t earned that kind of a contract yet. I’m sure Del Zotto is upset at getting paid AHL money for the 2010-11 season for which he got paid peanuts. He went from earning $1 million in 2009-10 to earning $62,000 in 2010-11. I’m sure he’s still mad about that because I know I’d be.
The real move here is to give Del Zotto a one year contract. Sather and Del Zotto meet in the middle and come up with a number for the upcoming season. Then next year Del Zotto can fight for whatever he wants and be subject to arbitration if he and Sather still can’t agree then. For the time being overpaying Del Zotto for one year isn’t the worst thing in the world as it most likely won’t affect any moves the team wants to make for the season ahead.
I’m confident Del Zotto will get a contract in hand by the end of August especially with the CBA still up in the air. No way Del Zotto is going to let this hang until he can possibly be locked out. That would be stupid for both parties.
