Rangers Shouldn't Do Anything Until A New CBA

There’s two weeks left until the NHL locks out and teams can’t make anymore moves after that happens. Right now though there’s rumors abound connecting the Rangers with defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo. While in theory the Rangers should be getting cover for the third pair, now is not the time to do it.

The Rangers especially should wait until after the new CBA is signed because at the moment they don’t really know where the new salary cap will fall. If the salary cap falls around say $65 million they can make trades with teams who need to get under that number. This doesn’t only apply to defenseman this will apply to anyone on the team. The Rangers should feel lucky they are only sitting at $58 million even with Michael Del Zotto still unsigned.

If the Rangers were to sign Carlo Colaiacovo today, not only do they potentially put themselves at risk for going over the new cap, they also burn any bridges for making changes before the season starts. That would be their team going forward and would have to live with it. There’s no reason to sign anyone for the next 14 days.

Also, if the new salary cap falls around the $61 million mark (which would be very low in my estimation) the Rangers could always trim easy salary by trading Mike Rupp and or Arron Asham to give themselves breathing room.
