Today was definitely a step back in CBA negotiations. As expected the NHLPA sent the NHL three proposals and they were all shot down within minutes. Actions speak louder than words, and the owners are basically saying “take our offer or leave it, because it’s the best you’ll do”.
While I don’t want to bore you with all the proposals I just want to say the third proposal the NHLPA gave sounds very fair on the surface. It immediately cuts their share of HRR to 50% immediately if the owners agree to honor everyone’s contract. This proposal also eliminates escrow entirely.
What is wrong with that proposal? The owners signed these contracts in “good faith” and are still trying to avoid paying the players their money. It boggles my mind how the owners don’t view that as fair. If they accept that part of the proposal they can win out on other stuff like contract length, Entry Level Contracts, arbitration rights, etc. Basically the owners would win out in the long run.
I’m still holding out hope both sides can save a full season.
