For his hit against Brandon McMillan, Chris Kreider has been served a one game suspension by the AHL. During the game Kreider was given a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. Having looked at the replay it was the kind of supplementary discipline that was necessary.
No it wasn’t the worst boarding penalty in the history of boarding penalties, but it’s a very dangerous play nonetheless. It’s the type of hit that can end a players career potentially. I think it’s great to see Kreider go in hard on the forecheck, but he also has to keep his head. With his huge size advantage on most players it’s easy for him to crush them, and that’s something he’ll have to keep in mind.
I definitely think the lockout is benefitting Kreider. Though the Whale are struggling and haven’t recorded a win yet, Kreider is learning invaluable things about being a pro that will further help his transition from a college player to a NHL player. Better he learns lessons like this one the hard way in the AHL rather than the NHL.
