Give Wade Redden A Chance

As most of you know by now, NHL teams are no longer allowed to hide their problems in the minors anymore. Any player with a salary over $1 million per year will count against the teams cap if he plays in the AHL.

With a cap of $70 million this season the Rangers would be stupid to not at least see what Redden can do. Yeah we joked about him being the worst defenseman ever, but I think he’s better than a couple of the guys we have now.

Here are our defenseman that are locks for this season:

  1. Marc Staal
  2. Dan Girardi
  3. Ryan Mcdonagh
  4. Michael Del Zotto
  5. Anton Stralman

That’s it. Wade Redden will have to fight for that 6th defenseman spot against Steve Eminger and Stu Bickel. I think he’s better than them both but he’ll have to show it.

I wouldn’t mind seeing him play that 6th defenseman role. In fact I hope he wins that spot in the lineup.

When Redden played for the Rangers he was the most overpaid defenseman in the NHL. I thought he was good enough to be in the NHL though. He contributed more than Stu Bickel to say the least. The Rangers just couldn’t afford to pay a 3rd pairing defenseman $6.5 million a season. Thus he was sent down.

I hope he’s able to come back to the Rangers and he’s able to win some fans over. I think if he comes back to the team, works hard, and contributes to the team’s success, the Rangers faithful will at least appreciate this chapter of his Rangers career.

This is Redden’s last shot with the Rangers as he will definitely be bought out of the remainder of his contract this summer. I hope he’s able to leave New York on a positive note, and not like how Chris Drury left.
