Is Buying Out Brad Richards A Possibility?

The question has been talked about recently, and yes I do believe we can be talking about buying out Brad Richards in the future.

It’s pure speculation, but if Brad Richards play doesn’t turn around (we all should hope it does) then the team can very well be talking about buying him out. His contract is unfavorable and Richards will really have to play close to his contract’s value to stay with the team.

The Rangers still have an amnesty buyout left, but it will have to be used next summer. There’s still plenty of time for Brad Richards to turn it around. The lockout I think has had an effect on his play and that I think is a big part of his poor performance thus far. Remember, he didn’t play during the lockout nor did he have a full training camp with the team. Let’s hope that has a part to play in this.

A question the Rangers will have to ask though when the time comes to decide to buy him out or not is “If Brad Richards were a free agent today, how much would a team pay him per season?”. If that number is significantly less than what the Rangers are paying him now, then the Rangers will be cutting ties with him.

Here’s the too long, didn’t read version: The decision to buy out Richards will take place next summer, and he has plenty of time for his performance to show if he should or shouldn’t be bought out.
