Rangers Claim Hamrlik, No Update On Staal

The Rangers today claimed unwanted 38 year old former first overall pick defenseman Roman Hamrlik off waivers. This claim is entirely coincidental with the Staal injury, so don’t take this as “Oh Staal might be injured, we need to replace him”.

Hamrlik was simply unwanted by Adam Oates. Whether he was actually ineffective this season remains to be seen. Hamrlik has 1,383 games of NHL experience and at the very least is an upgrade over Stu Bickel, Matt Gilroy, and possibly Steve Eminger as the 6th defenseman. He played well under Dale Hunter last year, and hopefully that translates he can succeed under Tortorella.

As for Marc Staal, there is no update. Eric Staal said he and his family are praying and waiting for the swelling to go down. Good news is Staal was never taken to the hospital for treatment, so that means the incident was never life threatening. Before tomorrow’s game I think we’ll know what the deal is with him.
