Can The Rangers Make The Playoffs?

Two things happened in the game against the Jets that were firsts for me. First off, while I was watching the game I turned it off at three different points and went into another room to play an old video game that I was enjoying. For the first time in an incredibly long time I was not interested that the Rangers were losing. Instead of getting very very very mad (as I usually do when they lose) I just walked away. Kudos to me. And I was not upset that they lost this game either. It was an incredibly important game but after the loss to Buffalo I kind of thought, “here we go again.” Inconsistency has been the theme for the Rangers this year.  Now they’ll go on a bad losing streak but come back to go on a winning streak before you  throw in the towel. It’s getting old. But for the first time it dawned on me tonight, a question I thought I would not have to ask myself this year but now I am asking myself. Will the Rangers make the playoffs? I thought for sure they were going to but now I am not too sure at all. I don’t think that this team will qualify for the playoffs this year. They have been way too inconsistent and have shown no signs of any playoff type team. There were two moments this year where I thought the Rangers had things figured out and would go on to compete with Boston and Pittsburgh for the top spots in the conference. The first time was after they beat Washington on February 17th at the Garden 2-1. They played a great game and were 8-5-1 at that point. Then they lost their next 4 games. Immediately after that they went on to win their next four. Things seemed well again. The Rangers going into Buffalo were 13-9-2. I thought the tide began to turn. I thought wrong. They lost the worst game of the year to Buffalo and capped it off with another loss to a Winnipeg team that is now in the 8th spot the Rangers once held. But now I know the Ranger team of this year. I have seen it all. Let me give you this statistic. Against NON playoff competition the Rangers are 10-2-1. So give them credit for beating the teams they must beat but it is this stat that is alarming. Against PLAYOFF teams this season the Rangers are 3-9-1…………. That leads me to believe that this team is just not a good hockey team. They are not terrible but just OK. Being OK was not what any Ranger fan expected this year including myself. Even if I thought the team was going to be OK this year I thought they would somehow sneak into the playoffs. They still could and there is a lot of hockey left to be played but if they keep at this pace, with the amount of urgency that will come from their opponents the Rangers will probably not make the playoffs. They need to get this fixed. If not, a lot of players and maybe even some coaching changes can happen even as early as this summer. There still is some time to change things but the Rangers expectations are not Cup or bust anymore. Right now they just need to make sure they can get to the playoffs.
