Last nights game could have really hindered the Rangers playoff hopes for the season, but with the Rangers winning they now can start looking up in the standings. Yes they are still sitting 8th in the East but they are only 2 points behind the 7th place Devils with a game in hand on them. The Islanders are actually tied with the Rangers in the points department but have played one more game. Sitting even further back with 34 points are the Hurricanes and Capitals. Weird how the winner of the Southeast division might not have enough points to qualify for the playoffs even as the 8th seed.
The Rangers still control their own destiny. According to Sports Club Stats they have a 56% chance of making the playoffs. 4th place in the Conference is impossible, 5th place would require a miracle, and 6th would require one of Toronto and Ottawa fall off and the Rangers surge. 7th or 8th place is the best the Rangers can really hope for that to happen they’re going to have to play some good hockey themselves. In the Rangers favor they play the teams they are chasing, and the teams that are chasing them. They play the Devils twice, the Islanders once, Toronto twice, and Carolina twice. They win a good chunk of those games they will be home free. If they beat the Devils and Islanders in all three contests I don’t see them not making the playoffs.
The Rangers certainly dug themselves a bit of hole going into the last portion of this season, but with improved play and the schedule favoring them I think they can dig themselves out.
