Since the Marian Gaborik trade, the Rangers boast a plethora of forwards and defenseman for the immediate and long term future with the team. New guys Ryane Clowe, John Moore, Derick Brassard, and Derrick Dorsett are here to stay. They’re not going anywhere for a bit. But the Rangers also have prospects waiting in the wings, so the question is how this is all going to play out.
Chris Kreider, JT Miller, Oscar Lindberg, Jesper Fast, and Dylan Mcilrath. All of those guys will be ready to play in the NHL between the beggining of the season next year and the start of the 2014 NHL season. This kind of puts the Rangers in a tough spot with some players this offseason.
Here’s a list of forwards that should definitely stay for next season.
Then there are the players I’d like the Rangers to get contracts done for: Ryane Clowe and Mats Zuccarello.
Assuming those players get signed to new deals then there would be exactly two forward spots up for grabs next year in the starting lineup. In case you didn’t see, Taylor Pyatt, Brian Boyle and Arron Asham would be traded this offseason. I definitely see JT Miller making the jump back to the lineup starting next season, and Chris Kreider as well. Jesper Fast and Oscar Lindberg will be here in a bit, but I think they’d need some time playing on the North American rinks and just get acclimated to the NHL style game. When they both make it to the show, Powe and probably most likely Mats Zuccarello could be traded as well.
On the defensive side of things, it gets a bit easier for the Rangers. Goodbye Roman Hamrlik and and Matt Gilroy. Most likely Steve Eminger is lost to free agency as well as his play has warranted a larger contract from another team (though I’d like to see him stay for that extra defensive depth). Our 6 defenseman going into next season are Staal, Girardi, McDonagh, Del Zotto, Moore, and Stralman. Dylan Mcilrath can be inserted for Stralman when he’s ready. There’s really no rush to get him into the lineup.
All in all after playing some armchair GM I think the Rangers are set for the immediate future and don’t need to sign anyone in free agency this offseason. There aren’t really any free agents on the market this summer I’d like to see the Rangers add anyway.
