4. Rangers versus Islanders

This rivalry can be easily summed up in two words: “Potvin Sucks!”

Since February 25th,1979 when Islanders defenseman Dennis Potvin checked Ulf Nillson and broke his ankle, Rangers fans have been chanting Potvin Sucks throughout the halls of Madison Square Garden. Doesn’t matter if the Islanders are in town or not, it still gets chanted.

The Islanders have long been in the shadows of the Rangers. The Blueshirts are in the mecca of New York City, while the Islanders are still stuck out on Long Island. But that will soon change as their move to the Barclays Center will be completed in the next couple of years.

Before the Islanders reawakening in the 2013 48 game regular season, it would almost seem like a scrimmage between the two teams. The Rangers would dominate and win almost every game going away.

But, with the Islanders making their first playoff appearance since 2007, maybe that will all change come October. The Isles have tremendous youth and are dangerous on the counter-attack, something that the Rangers should be looking out for the next time these two meet.

Something that won’t change however is the Potvin Sucks chant. We will be hearing that for years to come.
