Looking Ahead: New York Rangers

Staten Island, N.Y. – Some people may not really care about the team at this time of year. Its the beginning of the off-season. The Stanley Cup Final is still going on & other than the Rangers signing a new head coach there isn’t much exciting news in the news at the moment.

After the New York Rangers landed big name forward Rick Nash last off-season, they quickly became the big man on campus & a heavy favorite to win the Stanley Cup. Well that dream came to an end when they lost to the Boston Bruins in 5 games in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Now some may sit and wonder, in what years will it be the best chance for this team to bring Lord Stanley back to the City that Never Sleeps? Well the time is now. I give this team the next 2 seasons as they’re best chances to get it done. Here’s why:

Anybody who has been on knows what the Rangers roster looks like in the next two seasons, and if you haven’t you should go take a look. Be careful not to eat before hand, the amount of red and blue you may see might make you sick.

Rangers UFA this season:                           Rangers RFA this season:

– Ryane Clowe                                                  – Derek Stepan

– Roman Hamrlik                                            – Carl Hagelin

– Steve Eminger                                               – Mats Zuccarello

– Matt Gilroy                                                     – Ryan McDonagh

Rangers UFA next season:                         Rangers RFA next season:

– Ryan Callahan                                              – Derrick Brassard

– Brian Boyle                                                    – Chris Kreider

– Taylor Pyatt                                                  – Michael Del Zotto

– Darrol Powe                                                  – John Moore

– Aaron Asham

– Dan Girardi

– Anton Stralman

– Henrik Lundqvist

– Martin Biron

So basically, the majority of the teams contracts will be up in the next two seasons. Yes, Glen Sather & Co. will do everything in their power to re-sign every key piece to this team, but lets face it you cant have your cake and eat it too. If you read my post earlier in the off-season about Brad Richards I posted that I figured the organization would get Zucc, Stepan, Mac, Hagelin, & Clowe under contract IF they buyout Richards. We can only wait on that part & after hearing Clowe may have suffered 3 concussions from late March to the end of April I’m not entirely sure you take the risk on him. So if you can manage to get those other 4 under contract, basically this season may be the BEST chance this team has at winning the Cup. Or else pretty soon us die-hards may have to go through the brutal process of waiting to watch the team rebuild.

In a nutshell, I’m praying to the hockey gods. Hope you enjoyed.
