Staten Island, N.Y. – With the NHL Draft just a few days away, every team is preparing to make the best possible picks for their team. Over the past week we’ve seen a whole lot of roster moves across the league & many rumors getting thrown around. The most common move we’ve seen teams do this week? Buying out players.
The biggest question in New York City has been “What are the Rangers going to do with Brad Richards?”. Over the past few days, it seems as if every time a reporter was around Brad he was asked “Have the Rangers contacted you?”, “Are you staying with the team?”. Each time his answer was “I haven’t heard from the organization yet”. Well today he did, when the New York Rangers announced they will keep # 19 in Broadway for at least another year.
To me, this can only mean two things.
- The Rangers are looking to move space elsewhere during the Draft (trades).
2. Say goodbye to Ryane Clowe/Carl Hagelin.
If I had to guess, I’d say Clowe will be the player not re-joining the team next year. With the rumor that he sustained 3 concussions in the final two months of the NHL Season, how would you take a risk on someone like him who is going to want around 3 mill per season. It also wouldn’t surprise me to see the Rangers make a move to free up some CAP either. Keeping Richards makes everything else tighter for the organization. They have to resign their #1 center (Derek Stepan) & arguably their #1 D-Man (Ryan McDonagh).
Ever since the Carolina Hurricanes acquired Jordan Staal at last years NHL Draft, its been rumored that they are trying to get the whole Staal family to come play down in Raleigh. It also popped up the other day that the Hurricanes we’re looking to acquire a top defenseman. Carolina just so happens to have the 5th overall pick in the draft so it wouldn’t surprise me to see a Marc Staal for 1st Round Pick deal pop up.
Personally I love Staal, always have since he was drafted. He’s been the anchor on Defense for us for the past few seasons BUT with that eye situation I don’t think anybody knows what he is going to be like in the future. So if I’m Glen Sather and that deal hits my desk, I’m accepting it. The Rangers have a lot of GOOD young defensemen working their way up the ranks. If that trade were to happen and the Rangers landed the 5th overall pick with it, I’d expect them to take either Sean Monahan or Valeri Nichuskin. That’s a big IF though.
Just don’t be surprised if the Rangers don’t sign everyone you thought they would OR try to make a big move at/during the Draft. Only this season can tell if keeping “Broadway Brad” was a good idea or another one of Sather’s terrible decisions.
