Callahan, McDonagh, & Stepan invited to Team USA Camp

Staten Island, N.Y. – First it was Russia, then it was Canada. Yesterday Team USA announced the 48 players it has invited to its Camp for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Of those 48 players, 3 are from the New York Rangers.

Forwards Ryan Callahan and Derek Stepan, and Defenseman Ryan McDonagh got the call to go to orientation camp at the end of August in Arlington, VA.

I personally think all 3 players should make the team with ease. But then again this is the Olympics, not an All-Star Game and you have to work hard for a chance to represent your respective country.

Here is the list of the 48 Players invited to attend camp:

Goaltenders (6) - Jonathan Quick, Ryan Miller, Jimmy Howard, Craig Anderson, John Gibson, & Corey Schneider.

Defenseman (18) – Zach Bogosian, Dustin Bfyuglien, Ryan McDonagh, Seth Jones, Ryan Suter, John Carlson, Dan DeKesyer, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, Keith Yandle, Jacob Trouba, Kevin Shattenkirk, Brooks Orpik, Paul Martin, Nick Leddy, Jack Johnson, Erik Johnson, & Jake Gardiner.

Forwards (24) – Justin Abdelkader, David Backes,  Beau Bennett, Nick Bjugstad, Dustin Brown, Ryan Callahan, Alex Galchenyuk, Patrick Kane, Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel, Trevor Lewis, Kyle Okposo, TJ Oshie, Max Pacioretty, Kyle Palmieri, Zach Parise, Joe Pavelski, Bobby Ryan, Brandon Saad, Craig Smith, Paul Stastny, Derek Stepan, James Van Riemsdyk & Blake Wheeler.

17 of the 48 players played for Team USA in the 2010 Olympics when they took Canada to OT in the Gold Medal game which eventually they lost. The final roster will consist of 20 skaters & 3 goalies. The biggest challenge for Coaches while selecting this team will probably be at Goaltender where they have a whole lot of depth. They are also a lot deeper on Defensemen then they were 3 years ago in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics. My projected final roster:

Goalies (3) – Jonathan Quick, Ryan Miller, Jimmy Howard.

Defensemen (7) – Dustin Bfyuglien, John Carlson, Cam Fowler, Jack Johnson, Ryan McDonagh, Ryan Suter, Keith Yandle.

Forwards (13) – David Backes, Dustin Brown, Ryan Callahan, Alex Galchenyuk, Patrick Kane, Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel, TJ Oshie, Zach Parise, Joe Pavelski, Bobby Ryan, Derek Stepan, James Van Riemsdyk.

These are just my projections, the real team will have to be picked by coaches:

Peter Laviolette (Flyers), Dan Bylsma (Penguins), Todd Richards (Blue Jackets), & Tony Granato (Penguins).

& We will have to wait until the end of August for them.

  • Centerman

You think Stepan gets in huh? There’s not a lot of depth or talent down the middle to choose from. The US team has a lot more depth and skill on the Wings. That might get Stepan a 3rd or 4th Center position on team USA. You don’t think Stasny gets on the team? I think he’s better than Backes and JVR if they plan to use JVR as a Centerman. He’s a natural LW.
If they were to go by last years numbers, then Stepan would be team USA’s top Centerman. That’s where they should use him but he has the ability to play a checking role because he’s a special player.
Is Callahan going to be ready to participate in the camp? Is he going to be healed enough from labrum surgery to play and make the team? There is speculation that he wouldn’t be ready when the NHL season starts so how is he going to compete at that camp and win a spot? Is he a lock because he’s been there before? I would think its an open competition with regular drills that he may not be able to complete. Anyone know the answer(s)?
