Top 10 List: #6 Ryan Callahan

Yesterday we brought you someone from the Rangers past, as Eddie Giacomin was rated at number 7 overall list of top Rangers of all time. Today we continue the list, and bring you someone who we all know, we all love, and we know him as our captain of the New York Rangers.

Or you might know him as Captain Cally.

#6 – Ryan Callahan

Callahan was drafted by the Rangers 127th overall in the 2004 NHL entry draft. He would play the 2004-2005, and 2005-2006 seasons for the Guelph Storm of the OHL before making the jump to the pro game and join the Rangers organization. He would play sporadically for the Rangers during the first season, appearing in 11 games for the Rangers, where he would score his first two goals against the Boston Bruins and goalie Joey MacDonald on Saint Patricks Day 2007.

He would start with the Rangers in the 2007-2008 season, but a quick sprained knee sidelined him for a month. Once he returned to the Rangers, he wasn’t able to regain his exact form, thus sending him back to the AHL for him to recover and recoup, and find his strength again. After an injury to his idol Brendan Shanahan he would be called back up to the Rangers, and didn’t look back from that point, staying in the NHL and becoming a fan favorite and one of those home grown guys, that played the game “The Right Way”.

Callahan’s hard two way play, the ability to sacrifice his body to make a play, and chip in a tough goal have made many Ranger fans go out and purchase his jersey, a wise decision to purchase. Prior to the 2011-2012 season he became the 26th captain of the Franchise, something that his hard work, and his leadership ability has proven its worth. You might call goaltender Henrik Lundqvist the Rangers overall best player, but when you need to describe the heart and soul find the heartbeat of the team, it starts with their captain.
