Top 10 List: #5 Henrik Lundqvist

Yesterday we talked about the heart and soul of the team. The man who brings the team together and really shows the guys how to play, and how to stand their ground. Today, we talk about another heart and soul player, a player who might be the best player we’ve seen wear the Ranger uniform in quite sometime. A man, simply put, a king…

#5 – Henrik Lundqvist

Now what isn’t there to say about Lundqvist that already hasn’t been said about him on blogs across the world that not only cover the New York Rangers, but the NHL as well. Top 2 goalie in the league hands down (switches between him and Johnathan Quick of LA), one of the best players in the league that has not won the Stanley Cup yet (don’t worry his time will come). A man who his entire career has put the Rangers on his back, and has carried them further than many people expected.

Without Lundqvist, the Rangers would barely scratch at the surface. Would they make the playoffs? Probably, just at the skin of their teeth though. But Henrik Lundqvist is the MVP of the New York Rangers, ever since he started for them as a rookie in the 2005-2006 season.

Drafted in the 7th round during the 2000 entry draft, not many knew what to expect from Lundqvist. A player usually selected in the 7th round isn’t known to make that much of an impact, that much of a difference in the league, but Lundqvist wasn’t your normal 7th rounder.

A fun fact that you may not know about Lundqvist: he was a member of the 2002, gold medal winning Swedish Roller Hockey Team. But, he hung up his roller blades and stuck with ice hockey, where he’s made a name for himself ever since.

Big saves, big games. Henrik has been the guy in New York in the 2000s, he brought the lost years that embarrassed many Ranger fans (myself included) behind us, as we’re enjoying the taste of a Stanley Cup Playoff run. Where will this lead us? A hopeful Cup Finals appearance and win of course.

He’s been THE guy that the Rangers need, now its time for the rest of the team to play at the level he does.

Hank exemplifies consistency. Quick is an outstanding Netminder and one of the best but Hank is the top goalie in hockey now. Quick plays well when he has to in the big game but he always has a 1/2 dozen games a season where he looks uninterested. Not focused at all. Hank doesn’t have those games ever. Every goal that beats Hank bothers him. He shakes it off and shuts the door. In the big game they’re very comperable in numbers but Hank wins out over Quick because of his consistent play throughout every game of the regular season.
