Two for Roughing: NHL News and Notes [September 12, 2013]

Here’s some NHL news and notes for you to digest this morning.

Another day of training camp, no sign of Derek Stepan. I know what you’re thinking.. “how much longer do I have to hear about this?” Hopefully, not much longer as Glen Sather spoke to the media this morning, and stated that the two sides are in constant contact, but stood firm by his decision, which he made earlier in the summer stating that this deal has to be a bridge deal. It’s a good sign that the two sides are still talking, as I hope, as well as many Ranger fans hope that a deal gets done ASAP.

Another note coming out of Rangers training camp day one, is the signing of Johan Hedberg to a PTO, while backup, Martin Brion has yet to arrive to camp due to “personal reasons”. No one is clear on what the personal reasons are, but its telling that they brought in Hedberg on a PTO, just on the off chance that the issue he is having bleeds into the regular season. Hopefully that is not the case with Brion, as he is a word class backup for the Rangers, and overall good guy in the locker room.

Training camp today started for the Islanders at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, and Tweets from Andy Graziano and Rich Dias-Rodrigues from Eyes on Isles have shown a lot of cool, interesting views of the ice at the Barclay Center. It’s ready for Islanders action! Granted its for the New York Islanders, but anytime new ice surfaces, its good to see.

Also, it seems as Daniel Cleary won’t be playing for the Philadelphia Flyers after all. After a brief discussion last night with Paul Holmgren, he decided to stay with the Detroit Red Wings, instead of bolt to Philly for a deal that hasn’t been disclosed. Its good for the Flyers, who were going to wait to sign Cleary after the season started, as they get to save some cap space. But it just shows that no one wants to play for the Flyers.
