The wait is over. The time is 7PM tonight. The location: Prudential Center – Newark, New Jersey. The opponent: the hated New Jersey Devils. While really no true answers will be made tonight regarding lineup decision for their October 3 game against the Phoenix Coyotes, we’ll see the youngsters trying to make the team, trying to scare the veterans who’ve been on this team, and we’ll see veterans trying to make a name for themselves again (ie. Brian Boyle, Brad Richards).

Another player looking to reestablish himself as a top tier player, and make his playoff performance from 2012 seem less like a fluke, is Chris Kreider who is officially going into his second go around for his rookie season, another chance to grab the Calder trophy (he didn’t meet the minimum number of games to qualify himself as a second year player). So, he’ll be at it again. And he has a strong opportunity to prove himself worthy, as it’s expected that he’ll be slotted on the left side with Brad Richards and Rick Nash tonight in Newark.

Kreider had this to say to Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News:

Regardless of who the coaching staff was last year, I want to be coming into this season and think that’s the position I want to earn,” Kreider said. “I think everyone wants to be there. So I couldn’t speak to that … If anything, it’s now you’ve got to do something with it. I mean, you play with players of that caliber, you’d better produce, you’d better play well.

And produce he (hopefully) shall.

Now for some NHL news and notes..

  • Wouldn’t be a preseason game without a stretcher. Rusty Klesla of the Coyotes leaves game after a high hit by Kings defenseman Jordan Nolan
  • While the Vancouver Canucks are running 2 miles, Dallas Eakins is having his Edmonton Oilers team skate, and skate a lot (Torts 2.0?)
  • For those who are interested in Rangers preseason games only, and missed the preview of the new nets, here’s something to look at! (Spoiler: they’re the new nets)
